BALINEWS.ID – The countdown is officially on. The 22nd annual Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang is ready to ignite Bali’s famed reef break with an elite lineup of the world’s top tube riders. With the event’s one-month waiting period set to begin August 4, the island is already buzzing as surf royalty arrives in anticipation of the year’s most exciting barrel fest.
A promising swell looms on the horizon as local and international surfers converge on Padang Padang Beach. Organizers are closely monitoring ocean conditions, looking for that magic moment when the wave transforms into the deep, hollow freight train that Padang is known for. Event Director Harrison Mann encapsulates the energy perfectly:
“The Padang Cup is not just a contest; it’s a celebration of what makes surfing in Bali so special. When the wave turns on, it’s the best show on earth.”
The festivities officially kick off with the Opening Ceremony on August 3rd at 4:00 PM, featuring a traditional Kecak Dance and a live performance by Hawaiian singer-songwriter Landon McNamara. The ceremony marks the start of the event window, running from August 4 to September 4, allowing contest organizers to wait for the best possible single day of surf.
A select group of 24 surfers, 12 top Indonesians and 12 of the world’s finest, will compete in this prestigious invitational. Confirmed names include defending champion Noa Deane, Tosh Tudor, and Pipe Master Moana Jones Wong, with the full list to be revealed during the opening celebrations.
Maintaining its celebrated format, the 2025 event will feature two non-elimination heats per surfer, with their best two waves counted toward a spot in the final. It’s a format designed to highlight wave quality, reward tube-riding mastery, and give every invitee a real shot at glory.
“Our goal is to put the best tube riders on one of the most perfect waves on the planet,” adds Mann. “You don’t often see these stylish free surfers in a competitive spotlight. This event breaks the mold.”
Once the swell hits the ideal mark, the green light will flash, and competitors will have 48 hours to reach Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. That urgency adds to the excitement, with fans and athletes alike staying alert for the call.
To celebrate, The Official Rip Curl Cup Party will be held on Friday, August 29 at The Bench Brewery Uluwatu, an evening of good vibes, cold beer, and storytelling from deep in the channel.
