JAKARTA, BALINEWS – PT Hutama Karya (Persero) is strengthening accident prevention measures across all toll roads it manages, including the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS). The efforts include road safety education, operational patrols, improvements to road safety facilities, and stricter monitoring of vehicles that exceed permitted dimensions or load limits, known as Over Dimension Over Loading (ODOL).
Hutama Karya Director of Operations III, Iwan Hermawan, said road user safety remains the company’s top priority. In addition to improving safety facilities and personnel readiness, the company is intensifying its SETUJU (Safe Arrival at Your Destination) campaign to encourage motorists to drive responsibly throughout their journeys.
“Road user safety is always our top priority. We continue to improve safety facilities and personnel readiness, but we also want to remind the public that every driver plays an important role in protecting themselves and other road users,” Iwan said.
He explained that several factors can affect travel safety, including driver fatigue, drowsiness, lack of concentration, insufficient distance between vehicles, and vehicle conditions. Hutama Karya is therefore strengthening preventive measures through improved operational services and continued safety education.
The company regularly conducts Microsleep Operations and Sympathetic Safety Operations on several toll road sections. These activities include checking drivers who appear tired or drowsy, conducting basic health screenings, and distributing coffee and light snacks.
Drivers experiencing fatigue are advised to stop and rest before continuing their journeys. Operational personnel also conduct mobile patrols to monitor traffic conditions, identify potential hazards, and respond promptly to situations that could lead to accidents.
On the infrastructure side, Hutama Karya continues to evaluate and maintain road safety facilities, including warning signs, rumble strips, warning lights, reflective road markings, and other safety equipment. These facilities are designed to improve driver awareness, particularly at night and in conditions of limited visibility.
Monitoring of ODOL vehicles is also being strengthened through joint operations with relevant stakeholders. Vehicles that exceed permitted dimensions or weight limits may have reduced braking performance, stability, and maneuverability, increasing the risk of accidents and endangering other road users.
Through its SETUJU campaign, Hutama Karya promotes five key safety messages: make safety the top priority, ensure vehicles are in good condition, avoid speeding on toll roads, take breaks when tired or drowsy, and support the elimination of ODOL vehicles on toll roads.
Motorists are also reminded to maintain a safe following distance, wear seat belts, obey speed limits, and use traffic lanes appropriately. Drivers are advised against lane hogging, or continuously occupying the right-hand lane without overtaking, as this practice can disrupt traffic flow and trigger risky maneuvers.
In addition, the road shoulder is reserved for emergencies. Drivers who need to rest are encouraged to use designated rest areas rather than stopping on the shoulder without an urgent reason.
“We urge all road users to put the SETUJU messages into practice on every journey. Do not push yourself to continue driving when tired or drowsy, ensure your vehicle is roadworthy, obey speed limits, avoid ODOL vehicles, and use each lane according to its intended purpose,” Iwan said.
Hutama Karya emphasized that every accident will be taken seriously and evaluated to strengthen preventive measures, improve personnel readiness, and foster a safer and more responsible driving culture across the toll roads it manages.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to improving road safety through enhanced operational preparedness, road condition monitoring, better safety facilities, and consistent public education. These efforts are intended to provide safer and more reliable toll road services for all users.
