BALINEWS.ID – Nuanu Creative City has marked a historic step in its sustainability journey with the release of 5,000 butterflies from 11 native Balinese species, making it the biggest butterfly release ever recorded in Bali.
The ecological celebration reached its peak on Sunday (24/8) with 3,000 butterflies soaring into the skies, highlighting Nuanu’s mission to restore habitats and revive biodiversity within its 44-hectare sustainable landscape.
“Butterflies are not just beautiful; they are vital indicators of ecosystem health,” said Lev Kroll, CEO of Nuanu Creative City.
“They should not be trapped in books or frames but live freely for everyone, visitors, residents, and even our employees to encounter. Beyond butterflies, our team is also working to bring back fireflies, dragonflies, plankton, and many other small heroes that enrich Bali’s natural beauty,” he added.
Since its founding, Nuanu has actively supported butterfly life cycles by cultivating host plants and periodically releasing them throughout its park. To date, over 11,000 butterflies have been released, strengthening food chains and supporting thousands of flowering plants.
Agastya Yatra, Head of Environment at Nuanu Creative City, emphasized that the release is more than a symbolic act “Our mission is to create a self-regenerating ecosystem. Releasing 5,000 butterflies demonstrates Nuanu’s readiness to host them naturally. We aim for butterflies to thrive independently, repopulating and spreading across Nuanu with little human intervention in the years ahead.”
All butterflies released are native to Bali, including the Danaus chrysippus (Plain Tiger), Cethosia hypsea (Malayan Lacewing), and Papilio peranthus (Swift Peacock Swallowtail). The latter, a coastal species long established in the area, has become an iconic symbol of Nuanu’s ecological revival.
More than just a visual spectacle, the mass release is designed to foster environmental education and community engagement. By restoring habitats and creating a thriving pollinator population, Nuanu is positioning itself as a living classroom—a place where people can directly experience the interconnection between humans and nature.
Nuanu Creative City continues to expand its commitment to sustainability, envisioning a future where culture, innovation, and ecological balance exist side by side. (*)
