BNEWSID – Indonesia’s tourism sector has entered a new chapter. The House of Representatives (DPR RI) officially approved the Tourism Bill (RUU Kepariwisataan) to become law during the 6th Plenary Session of the 2025–2026 legislative term at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Thursday (Oct 2, 2025).
Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana emphasized that the revision of Law No. 10 of 2009 will serve as the cornerstone for building a tourism industry that is higher in quality, inclusive, adaptive, and sustainable. “Tourism is not only about showcasing Indonesia’s natural beauty and culture, but also about creating jobs, increasing foreign exchange, and driving the national economy,” she said.
The bill introduces a new paradigm through a comprehensive tourism ecosystem. It highlights holistic destination management, the development of human resources, early tourism awareness education, and strengthening the role of villages and community-based tourism. It also regulates infrastructure development, the use of technology, as well as cultural-based promotion and international collaboration.
Minister Widiyanti further noted that tourism promotion will expand beyond nature and culture, involving Indonesia’s diaspora and a wide range of creative activities such as festivals, arts, sports, and exhibitions. “These initiatives have proven effective in stimulating the local economy while reinforcing cultural identity and environmental awareness,” she stressed.
Chairman of Commission VII DPR RI, Saleh Partaonan Daulay, said the bill reconstructs the philosophical foundation of national tourism. “Tourism is now positioned as an instrument of civilization building, the strengthening of national identity, and the fulfillment of human rights to travel,” he remarked.
Following unanimous approval, the bill will be submitted to President Prabowo Subianto for ratification. Under the 1945 Constitution, if the president does not sign it within 30 days, the bill will automatically become law.
The plenary session was also attended by several ministers, senior officials from the Ministry of Tourism, and representatives from various ministries and agencies. (*)
