BALINEWS.ID – Indonesia’s top female tube riders put on a spectacular display at the legendary Padang Padang break as Taina Izquierdo emerged victorious in the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Women’s Local Trials, securing her place in the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang 2026 Main Event alongside runner-up Paris Nalendra.
Perfect surf conditions arrived just in time for the competition, with a powerful south-southwest groundswell transforming Padang Padang into the world-class barrel it is famous for. As the afternoon tide dropped, the waves cleaned up and provided competitors with an ideal stage to showcase their tube-riding skills.
Recognizing the improving conditions, contest officials extended the women’s final from the scheduled 45 minutes to a thrilling 70-minute showdown, giving the four finalists more opportunities to capitalize on the building swell.
The action started immediately as Kailani Johnson opened the heat with an excellent 7.33-point ride after threading the first clean barrel of the final. Moments later, Paris Nalendra delivered one of the standout performances of the day, disappearing completely behind the curtain before emerging cleanly through the exit to earn a 7.93, the highest single-wave score of the final.
Not to be outdone, Taina Izquierdo answered with a fearless ride of her own, charging a heavy six-foot set wave and getting spat out of the barrel for a 7.87. She later backed it up with another clean tube worth 4.50, giving her a winning two-wave total of 12.37.
Behind the battle for first place, Nalendra and Johnson fought intensely for the second qualifying spot. Despite Johnson’s impressive opening score, Nalendra managed to find the backup score she needed, edging ahead by just 0.43 points to secure her place in the 2026 Main Event.
Following her victory, an emotional Izquierdo admitted the win represented much more than simply qualifying for one of the world’s most prestigious surfing competitions.
“It means so much to me. My friends know how much I’ve doubted myself, especially when it comes to surfing waves outside my comfort zone. They’re the reason I paddled out today because they’ve always believed in me more than I’ve believed in myself,” Izquierdo said after the final.
She explained that overcoming her own fears became the biggest achievement of the day.
“My goal was simply to make it out of one barrel, and I did it. Now I know I’m capable, and I’m so proud of myself. This one’s for my friends who never stopped believing in me, and it’s also for myself—for showing up even when I was scared,” she added.
Another standout performer was Lidia Kato, who repeatedly committed to heavy backhand waves before finding a clean barrel that earned 4.47 points, highlighting the fearless approach that has made her one of Bali’s most respected female tube riders.
While the women’s competition enjoyed ideal conditions, organizers decided not to run the Men’s Local Trials after inconsistent surf made it difficult to ensure a fair contest. Instead, invited male surfers were given exclusive access to Padang Padang for a 90-minute warm-up session while officials continue monitoring forecasts for another suitable swell before the end of July.
With the result, Izquierdo and Nalendra officially qualify for the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang 2026 Main Event, where they will join event wildcards Kya Heuer and Jasmine Studer when the competition launches during its August 1–31 waiting period.
Before the main event begins, fans are invited to attend the Official Opening Ceremony on August 1 at 4 p.m. at Padang Padang Beach. The celebration will feature athlete introductions, a press conference, a traditional Balinese Kecak Dance performance, and a live show by Australian indie-rock band Floodlights.
Contest organizers will continue monitoring wave forecasts throughout the remainder of July to determine the best day to complete the Men’s Local Trials.
The Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang 2026 will once again be broadcast live worldwide, with organizers standing by for the season’s first world-class swell under the event’s iconic motto: “It’s on when it’s on.” (*)
