BALI, BALINEWS.ID – Indonesia’s rising surfing stars are ready to challenge seasoned veterans as the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang 2026 Local Trials officially begin their waiting period throughout July, marking another chapter in one of the country’s most prestigious surfing events.
Running from July 1 to July 31, 2026, the Local Trials will only be held on a single day when the legendary Padang Padang break delivers ideal waves. The unique competition format gives local surfers a rare opportunity to surf the iconic reef break with limited competitors in the lineup while battling for coveted spots in the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang 2026 Main Event.
This year’s edition highlights a significant generational shift in Indonesian surfing.
Defending Local Trials champions Westen Hirst and Jasmine Studer, who became the youngest-ever winners of the men’s and women’s divisions, have inspired a new wave of talent eager to follow in their footsteps.
Reflecting that momentum, eight of the 24 invitations in the men’s division have been awarded to youth and Pro Junior surfers, representing one-third of the competition field. The lineup combines emerging talents with former champions, experienced finalists, and Padang Padang specialists, creating a highly competitive contest where experience meets youthful ambition.
Event Director Harrison Mann said the evolution of the Local Trials is one of the event’s greatest achievements.
“One of the things we’re most proud of is seeing the Local Trials continue to evolve. It’s important that the Rip Curl Cup remains a platform where Indonesia’s best young surfers can challenge themselves alongside the athletes who have built this event’s legacy. That’s how the level keeps progressing, and we’re excited to see who steps up when Padang turns on,” Harrison Mann said.
The men’s division features 24 invited Indonesian surfers, including Ryuki Waida, Bronson Meydi, Garut Widiarta, Made Adi Putra, Raditya Rondi, Koki Hendrawan, Kalani Ryan, Putu Arya Gunata, Agus Setiawan, and several other top local competitors.
Meanwhile, the women’s division will showcase Kailani Johnson, Aura Zeflin, Taina Angel Izquierdo, and Liliana Bowrey.
The men’s competition will adopt a non-elimination round-robin format, with surfers competing in two 30-minute heats under a four-man priority system. The combined scores from each surfer’s two best waves across both heats will determine the final standings, with the top four men earning direct qualification for the Rip Curl Cup Main Event.
The women’s competition will consist of a single 30-minute Grand Final, where the top two finishers will secure places in the 2026 Main Event.
Contest officials will closely monitor swell forecasts throughout July and will only announce the event once Padang Padang reaches world-class conditions. All invited surfers will receive at least 48 hours’ notice before the competition is called on.
Following the Local Trials, the official Opening Ceremony is scheduled for August 1, 2026, at Padang Padang Beach, while the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang 2026 Main Event will run on a one-day swell during its August 1–31 waiting period. The event will conclude with the official party on August 29, 2026.
Celebrating 23 years of world-class barrel riding, the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang remains Indonesia’s longest-running and most prestigious invitational surfing competition. The 2026 Main Event will feature an exclusive field of just 24 invited surfers, 12 of Indonesia’s best alongside 12 elite international tube riders, ensuring another spectacular showcase at the world-famous “Balinese Pipeline” when the perfect Indian Ocean swell arrives.
